Elephant ball is somewhat similar to soccer. The biggest difference is the size of the ball: elephant ball uses a gym ball with a diameter of 18 to 30 inches. The large ball makes the game interesting while also evening out many of the differences in skills that are more prominent in soccer. It also makes for a more fun and versatile game that can be played by both men and women.
The rules are slightly different than in soccer, and so is the field. There are no goalies or offsides, and instead of throw-ins, the game is restarted with sideline kicks. There has to be a certain number of both women and men on the field at all times, and player substitutions must take place on the fly.
In addition to Finland, elephant ball is played at least in Estonia, Latvia, Germany, Spain, Russia, and the US. The annual World Elephant Ball Championships are held in Savonlinna. Championship games have been organized since 2008. The tournament includes two series: one for companies and “Elephants.” Teams eligible to play in the Companies Series include work communities and teams that use a company’s name or brand in their name. The Elephant Series is open to all teams.
